Synopsis:

In Bolivia, the city of El Alto is the result of a massive migration of Aymaras, who left long-forgotten communities on the Andes with the intent to improve their life quality in the city. It started as a marginal settlement from the capital, but it has quickly become a thriving economy and is now the largest city of the country.

Different realities have come together very suddenly, but the shared culture and traditions are what have always kept the city united. They have fought their way up society alone and now they have opened themselves up to the world, finding in architecture, a way to express their values and traditions.

El Alto is a buffer city, both geographically and culturally, between the rural and the urban contexts in Bolivia and it reflects the pursuit of the Aymaras to redefine their place in society and their contemporary identity.
